An Inside Look at a Local’s Day: Seeing Daytona Beach Like a Local

Daytona Beach. The name evokes white sandy beaches, roaring race car engines, and the excitement of the racetrack. It’s so much more to those of us who live here full time, though. It’s the familiar and welcoming people you encounter at your favorite local location, the beat of the waves on the shoreline, and the scent of sea air. So put on your flip-flops and sunglasses and grab a White Claw, because we’re going to explore Daytona Beach like locals today.

Good morning:

Let’s begin the morning at The Broken Egg Cafe for breakfast, a genuine local experience. This is an institution in Daytona Beach, so forget about the packed tourist traps. Imagine well-cooked omelets bursting with cheese, fluffy pancakes heaped with fresh fruit, and a potent cup of coffee to start the day. A perfect way to start your day. It’s a popular spot for a reason, so be ready to wait in line!

After breakfast, head down to the beach. But forget the crowded Boardwalk – we’re heading south, towards the quieter stretches. Find a secluded spot, maybe near Sunglow Pier, and soak up the sun. Pack a cooler with some ice-cold drinks and maybe even a frisbee for a game of beach volleyball.

Midday:

Time for lunch! Skip the typical tourist traps and head to Aunt Catfish’s Restaurant. This unassuming spot serves up some of the best seafood in town. Don’t miss the catfish, of course, but their shrimp and grits are legendary.

After lunch, it’s time to explore some local gems. Head inland and check out the Museum of Arts & Sciences. This underrated museum boasts impressive exhibits on everything from Florida history to contemporary art.

Afternoon:

For a true taste of local life, head to the Daytona Flea Market. It’s a sprawling maze of treasures, from vintage clothing and antique furniture to quirky souvenirs and delicious local treats. You never know what you might find, and it’s a great way to spend an afternoon browsing and chatting with the friendly vendors.

Evening:

As the sun begins to set, head back towards the beach. Grab a drink at The Deck, a legendary beachfront bar with live music and stunning ocean views. Enjoy the sunset with a local craft beer or a refreshing cocktail.

For dinner, indulge in some authentic Italian cuisine at The Cellar. This intimate restaurant offers a romantic ambiance and a menu featuring fresh pasta, homemade sauces, and delicious seafood.

Evening Entertainment:

After dinner, catch a live music performance at one of the many local bars and clubs. The Funky Monkey Wine Company often hosts live music, or you can check out the weekly entertainment schedule at the Ocean Deck.

Hidden Gems:

Lighthouse Point Park: This beautiful park offers stunning views of the Halifax River and is a great spot for a picnic or a leisurely stroll.
Tomoka State Park: Explore the natural beauty of this state park with hiking trails, canoeing, and kayaking opportunities.
Bulow Creek State Park: Discover the remnants of a 19th-century sugar plantation and enjoy a peaceful nature walk through the lush Florida landscape.

Local Tips:

Avoid peak season: If possible, visit during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall) to avoid crowds and enjoy more affordable prices.
Embrace the local culture: Attend a local event, such as a farmers market or a community festival.
Support local businesses: Dine at local restaurants, shop at independent boutiques, and patronize small businesses whenever possible.
Be respectful of the environment: Help keep our beaches clean and protect our natural resources.

Daytona Beach is more than just a tourist destination; it’s a vibrant community with a rich history and a unique character. By exploring beyond the typical tourist traps and embracing the local culture, you’ll discover a side of Daytona Beach that most visitors never experience. So, come on down, and experience the magic of Daytona Beach like a true native.

A Family’s Enduring Legacy

The Story Behind the Street Jimmy Ann Drive, the street with two names.

You may have spotted this roadway on your way through Daytona’s mainland. And like me, you may have questioned why a street has a name that combines the names of a woman and a man. Find out why the story behind Jimmy Ann Drive is a part of Daytona’s history.

Before race cars pushed the boundaries of horsepower, Daytona was a quiet place. The quaint coastal community of Daytona Beach, Florida, was more famous for its calm beaches than its fast-paced lifestyle. Then along came Bill France Sr., the founder of NASCAR. He was a man with determination, a vision, and an unquenchable need for speed.

Bill, who worked as a mechanic in the race car scene, recognized the potential in the emerging field of auto racing. On the hard-packed sands of Daytona Beach, he witnessed the exhilarating scene of early races as fearless drivers pushed their vehicles to the maximum. But beneath the surface of this he also witnessed the disorder, the disarray, and the risk that was involved.

Thus, in 1948, Bill France Sr. took a risk to make a change in racing. Along with the help of his wife, Anne B, they worked together to organize racing. The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, or NASCAR, was established by them. It wasn’t a simple process, because there was doubters, skeptics, and countless hurdles to get beyond. Yet, Bill persisted with Anne by his side. A genuine partner in this project, Anne B. offered not only consolation but also insightful advice. However, by building a fan base, they had the key to NASCAR’s success. They accomplished this through marketing and public relations.

Together, they built a foundation for a sport that would captivate millions. They organized races, established rules, and cultivated a sense of community among drivers, crew members, and fans. Daytona Beach, once a quiet coastal town, began to transform into a hub of high-octane excitement.

Their son, Jim, grew up immersed in the world of racing. He witnessed his parents’ dedication, their passion, and their unwavering belief in the potential of NASCAR. He learned the intricacies of the sport, the importance of innovation, and the value of building lasting relationships.

Today, Jim France continues to lead NASCAR, steering the sport into the 21st century. He has overseen the expansion of NASCAR globally, attracting new fans and captivating audiences worldwide. He has embraced technological advancements, introducing innovations that enhance the racing experience for both drivers and spectators.

As NASCAR grew, so did Daytona Beach. The Speedway, a testament to the France family’s vision, became an iconic landmark, attracting millions of visitors each year. The roar of engines echoed through the city, transforming it into a vibrant hub of tourism and economic activity. Hotels, restaurants, and shops sprang up to cater to the influx of visitors, creating a thriving local economy.

But the impact of the France family extends beyond the racetrack. They have been generous supporters of their community, contributing to various charitable organizations and initiatives that improve the lives of local residents.

And so, to honor their extraordinary contributions, a street near the Speedway was named Jimmy Ann Drive, a tribute to Anne B. France and her son, Jim. It’s a small gesture, perhaps, but a powerful one. As drivers navigate this unassuming street, they are subtly reminded of the vision, dedication, and perseverance of the France family.

Jimmy Ann Drive is more than just a street name; it is a symbol of a legacy that continues to inspire. It is a reminder that with passion, perseverance, and a shared vision, even the most ambitious dreams can become a reality. It is a testament to the power of family, the importance of community, and the enduring impact that individuals can have on the world around them.
